Tripods are a crucial component of any photographer’s arsenal. They help keep the camera steady and provide stability for shots that would otherwise be blurry or difficult to see.
But, How much does a tripod cost? That question is one that many people ask themselves when they’re looking to purchase their first tripod, but it can be difficult to answer because there are so many different types out there.
This article will go over how much the average person pays for their first tripod and what you should look for when shopping around!
What is a Tripod?
To produce a smooth video without any shake, you must take advantage of the hardware of your camera. It is one of the key ways to take a high-quality video shot. A tripod helps you attain this goal. It supports the weight of an object that allows you to take a steady video.
How Much Does a Tripod Cost?
There are many different types of tripods and each kind is going to cost you differently. Most of these come with a user manual as well, but some are very basic and don’t include one.
The most common price range for a tripod is between $25 to $75.
When deciding how much you want to spend on a tripod, you should ask yourself a few important questions.
First of all, what are you actually going to use the tripod for? Will it be just for professional shoots or will you be using it for weddings or events?
Secondly, do you want to spend the money on a cheap model or are you willing to spend more on something that will last you a long time?
You should also consider the type of tripod you are going to use.
What to Look for in a Tripod:
In general, there are 4 categories of tripods:
Single-axis tripods – These are best for landscapes. They allow you to pan freely around in any direction, but not to change the height in any way. A single-axis tripod makes a great support for photography, but it’s not as sturdy or stable as a dual-axis tripod. They are also expensive.
Multi-axis tripods – These are better for photographing static subjects such as landscapes. These tend to be expensive but can allow for greater customization of the tripod so that it can be customized to suit the needs of your photo.
Monopod – This type of tripod is best for photographing subjects like sports and street photography. These tend to be affordable and can be set up quickly.
The Average Cost of a Tripod:
The first question that we have to ask ourselves when we’re looking at tripod prices is just how much do we’re looking to spend?
There are so many different types and sizes of tripods out there, and in the past, we’ve mentioned the differences between gimbals and ball heads.
But, while both of those items help give you the stability you’re looking for when photographing, they’re two totally different products.
When you’re in the market for a tripod, you’re not buying a toy to play with! You’re looking to take pictures of objects that are up to 10 feet or more in the air.
That’s something that a gimbal can’t do.
A tripod does, however, still need to be fairly strong in order to hold the weight of your camera.
How Much Should You Budget?
According to the folks at Go Into Photography, the average cost of a tripod is around $250. That’s around $160 more than the price of a tripod that’s only 1-inch shorter than yours. But, that’s only if you’re getting a traditional tripod. If you’re going to be using your tripod for still shots and videos, that cost per inch could easily exceed $1,000.
Personally, my main tripod is a Manfrotto Helix (sold here) that retails for $225. It’s big enough to capture landscape shots but lightweight enough that it’s comfortable to carry for long periods of time.
If you’re a videographer, you may have to make a bit of a sacrifice on size, but you’re going to be saving money per inch with a less cumbersome tripod.
What Does the Average Person Spend on a Tripod?
The current average cost of a tripod on the market is around $50. That’s a great price for any type of photography gear and a great starting point for photographers with tight budgets.
While this doesn’t cover a lot of hardware, it does cover the majority of what most people would purchase for their first tripod.
And, while you can certainly spend even more on a tripod, it’s worth looking into the accessories that go with the best tripods to save yourself some money and help you out when you’re planning to purchase a tripod for the first time.
The ideal tripod is one that will keep your camera on a level and stable platform, but your budget will determine how much you can spend.
Top Brands for Tripods:
Before jumping into the actual price comparison, it’s important to first understand which brand is considered the “top” brand when it comes to tripods. This comes from the different types of models and features each company offers.
While it’s not the most popular brand of tripods, Pentax offers some of the most technologically advanced tripods on the market. These tripods have a lot of feature-packed options, which is why they are commonly referred to as “pro” tripods.
Hikianalia, a camera backpack designed for professional photographers
Nomad 35, the go-to lightweight and compact tripod for pro shooters
For many photographers, Nomad is the go-to brand for tripods. They offer high-quality tripods that can be used with pretty much any camera setup.
Types of Tripods:
There are three main types of tripods:
Monopods are the cheapest, easiest to set up and use, and have the least amount of post-release adjustments.
When compared to a tripod, monopods are quite simple. They’re great for beginners as they’re easy to put up and break down, and can be easily set up in a variety of different ways.
Monopods have the advantage of being extremely light, and also have the tendency to be quite small. If you’re the person that always forgets their tripod somewhere, or your tripod always takes up too much space in your bag, then a monopod might be a great option for you.
They’re also easier to carry as they’re small and compact and tend to be more compact when folded away, so you can fit more in your bag if you need to.
What Kind of Tripods are There:
One tripod design you may not be familiar with is the ball head. This type of tripod is designed specifically for photographing people. Ball heads are generally used for full-frame cameras, so you can use the tripod on any camera that you choose.
If you’re a landscape photographer and you’re used to using a tripod, you might also be interested in a tripod that features a head for shooting up-close and wide-angle landscapes.
Another popular type of tripod design is a ball head that features a head that allows you to switch between flat and tripod modes. In flat mode, the camera is at the same angle all the way around, but in tripod mode, the head allows you to hold the camera and camera bag at different angles.
Some types of tripods are only available as tripod heads or head combinations.
One of the most expensive types of tripods is the basic tripod.
The camera can be supported by a basic tripod with virtually any camera body, lens, or accessory that you would find on your camera’s unit of measurement. However, with this type of tripod, its height is fixed, so you’re stuck with either purchasing something that is too large for your camera’s body, or something that is too small for your camera.
While it may seem too expensive for some photographers, a basic tripod is actually very well worth the investment.
As an example, a basic tripod with a 90mm lens attached is $62.50 from Amazon.com. You can purchase a tripod with a 100mm f/2.8 for about the same price. And, you can purchase a 1.75-inch tripod for about $50.
This is the most expensive tripod that you can buy. Professional tripods can range from $1,000 to $1,500 or even more, with most averaging about $2,000. For professional photography sessions, professional tripods are definitely worth the cost. Professional models are made of top-quality materials that will last for years.
While it’s worth the investment, the most important thing to remember is to go with a tripod made by a reputable company that offers at least a 5-year warranty.

Choosing Your First tripod:
The first step in choosing the right tripod is to choose one that’s within your budget.
You may find that you’ll need to invest a bit more upfront if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors or have heavy gear. It’s best to check this out first so that you’re prepared.
It’s important to also keep in mind that some tripods cost significantly more than others. For example, a professional-grade tripod with motorized panning can easily cost $1,000 or more, making it out of reach for many of us.
Thankfully, there are some good options that cost far less and are quite versatile.
Tips For a First-time Buyer:
There are tons of options when it comes to buying a tripod. A lot of photographers are lured in by the super cheap price of a tripod. On the surface, they may look like a good buy! But, before you buy, be sure that you read the specs on each one and make sure that you feel comfortable with the brand.
Do your research! The best way to learn about the different types of tripods is to go online and read reviews from other photographers. It is always better to purchase something that you feel confident with. You should also check to see if a tripod is compatible with the camera that you’re currently using. Tripods are great for using with old or cheap DSLR cameras. However, as your camera advances, it may no longer work properly on a tripod.
Let’s Get to shopping!
The average price of a tripod is around $45-$150
When people are trying to figure out what type of tripod to buy, there are generally a couple of things they can look at:
The brand – Make sure you’re getting a reputable brand that has been around for a while. A well-known tripod company is Tumbling Tree or InStnity.
Speed – You need a tripod with enough speed to get the shot you want (in case you get shaky hands).
Resistance – Having a tripod that is sufficiently strong will help you capture shots that might be too wobbly for other tripods.
Size – You also need to consider the size. Unless you want to lug around the biggest and heaviest tripod on the market, get the smallest one you can.
Price is also important.
